Purpose of the course:
Captive animal management is an existing field which focuses on the care of animals in bird-parks, zoos and other animal holding facilities, breeding centres and rehabilitation centres.
This qualification was designed for learners in the above fields to cater to the workplace needs of the sector. Many employees in this industry currently do not have any formal qualification that is specific to their needs.
This qualification seeks to address man`s social, moral and ethical responsibility through caring for animals in captive facilities. This involves both the physical and mental well-being of the animals. This qualification further seeks to broaden the learner`s understanding of the role the above-mentioned facilities play in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, urban conservation and ecotourism.
The competencies catered for in this Qualification have commonality with National Certificate: Conservation (Natural Resource Management and Natural Resource Guardianship) Fisheries (Resource Guardianship, Resource Management and Fisheries Observation: Deep Sea) as well as in the fields of agriculture and environmental education, which would allow for portability. This qualification is a flexible, and accessible, means whereby learners can access various career opportunities, for example, General Assistants, Keepers, Section Heads and Curators.
At the end of this course, the learner will have knowledge regarding:
- Care for a range of animals in a captive environment.
- Demonstrate an appropriate level of empathy for animals in care.
- Perform basic animal husbandry.
- Maintain and adapt exhibits.
- Interact with the public appropriately.
- Adhere to appropriate health and safety protocols.
- Interpret animal behaviour.
- Maintain life support systems.
- Use language, communication skills and mathematical literacy to communicate workplace data to role-players in the workplace.
